Our Story

Our story starts before us.

It begins in 1978 when Matt’s dad, Michael Cocco, opened the first Cocco’s Pizza in Norwood, PA. Cocco’s became a Delco favorite and Matt’s first job. As soon as Matt was old enough to bus a table, he was a part of the family pizza business.

In 2011, the ice cream shop next door closed and the Coccos decided to open a gelateria. Matt’s mom, Theresa, had always been busy working behind the scenes. But she took Cocco’s Gelateria and ran with it. She learned how to make gelato and soon after taught Matt.

Matt can make a great pizza, but he found himself enjoying the creativity that comes with making gelato. This quickly became his favorite part of the job.

Matt and Jenica met in 2017. Jenica’s dating profile said “I’m an ice cream connoisseur,” and Matt’s said “I make gelato”. Two years later, we got married.

In 2022, (after 44 years!) the Coccos sold both businesses, and Matt’s parents began their well-deserved retirement.

Matt spent a year selling gelato ingredients, attending trade shows, and learning more about the science of making great gelato. He then spent a year at a gelateria in Rittenhouse, where he had the opportunity to make gelato in Philly for the first time. Then, in December 2024, we took a leap and launched our own gelato business.

Jenica is an Occupational Therapist by trade, but she brings her love for gelato & experience in event planning and social media marketing to the team.

So here we are, following in the family’s footsteps with Cocco’s Gelato. Even kept the name.

Two people stand behind a green gelato cart labeled 'Cocco's Gelato' in a warehouse setting. They are smiling and holding ice cream cones, sharing a moment together. The cart has a canopy and a bicycle attached to it.
